
Julie London (nee Peck; September 26 1926 - 18 October in 2000) was an American singer and actress with a career that spanned over 40 years. London was a torch performer, known for her soft, smooth vocals. She recorded more than 30 albums of jazz and pop standards between 1955 and 1969. Inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame was the recording of "Cry Me a River" the song she premiered on her debut album. London was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for her role in the role of Dixie McCall, a nurse on the television show Emergency! London was born in Santa Rosa to vaudevillian parents. Her professional career began as an actress , while she was employed as an elevator operator in downtown Los Angeles. London's 35-year acting career began in the film industry in 1944. It included parts as the female lead in several westerns. The singer signed a recording contract with Liberty Records in the mid-1950s. This marked the beginning of her professional music career. The album she released was her last album of studio recordings in 1969 however, she continued to be a hit in the female starring role of nurse Dixie McCall in the television show Emergency! (1972-1979) in which she co-starred alongside Bobby Troup. The show was created by her former husband Jack Webb.
